Building delivery

Before the building arrives, make space to store and inventory the components. Check primary framing against the manifest and the erection drawings. Count boxes and crates. Look at purlin and girt bundles for damage. Dry anything that arrived wet before you store it. Store so water cannot pond in bundles or frames. Do not cover tightly — leave air around the steel. Warehouse items (doors, windows, fasteners, mastic) go in a dry, secure location.

Shortages & damages

A complete inspection is made at delivery. The receiver should conditionally sign the delivery receipt if there is any evidence of damage. Write a detailed note of the damage or shortage on the receipt. Do not write opinions about how you think the product was damaged. Date and signature on that notation. Concealed damage that is not noted can become the receiver’s problem later.

• Notify the carrier immediately if the shipment is damaged and ask them to send a representative. Call the project manager if you want help. Request a copy of the inspection report.
• Take at least six pictures of damaged material — each side of the trailer, front and rear. Photograph the carrier trailer number. Photograph damaged part numbers and write those numbers on the delivery receipt.
• File the claim with the carrier as soon as possible: original bill of lading or paid freight bill, copy of the inspection report, disposition of damaged material, amount of claim. The manufacturer can assist. Do not dispose of damaged material — the carrier may salvage it. Failure to save it can kill the claim.

Always inventory building components as they arrive, and not more than two weeks after delivery. Immediately report shortages and damaged materials to the project manager. Inventory and store warehouse items dry and secure. Only take out the bolts, fasteners, and mastic you will use that day.
