Panels and trim for immediate use

Place bundles at pre-planned spots around the perimeter, as close as practical to the work. Use the panel-layout drawings. Cover opened bundles with polyethylene when you quit for the day. If panels are crated, put the lid back on before covering. Bundles shipped on edge stay upright; block the edge with 2×4s so panels cannot slip. Do not stack material on opened bundles.

Panels and trim not for immediate use

• Store under cover in a designated area.
• Slope bundles for drainage — wood blocking under one end.
• Stack no more than two high, bearers of the upper bundle in line with the lower. If bearers do not align, put 2×6 planks longitudinally between the bundles.
• If condensation is likely, slit or loosen the shrink wrap so the bundle can breathe.

Trim and small parts in cartons

Cartons must not get wet. Use 2×4 blocking spaced not more than 3′-0″ o.c. Keep cartons square so trim does not bend. Cover with polyethylene or equal, ends open for air. Do not open until you need the contents. If cartons arrive wet, break them open and dry the contents.

Structural steel

1. Primer is short-term protection for transit and erection — not a finish coat, and not a reason to reject the steel for shop-coat inconsistency.
2. Keep members off the ground. Block and slope for drainage, or cover so water cannot pond.
3. If a finish coat goes over primer, the painting contractor verifies compatibility.
4. Galvanized members store the same way. Nested secondary that gets wet — unstack, block, and slope until it dries. White rust does not affect service life and is not grounds for rejection.

Connectors and sealants

• Bolts, nuts, washers, screws, rivets, mastic, and caulk stay in closed containers in a protected shelter.
• At the end of the day, unused connectors and sealants go back in the container.
• Do not install bolts that have become dirty or rusty.
• Do not use dirty sealant or mastic.
